Default Scariest Horror Movies?

We've had threads about the best horror movies of all time, but what are the scariest horror movies of all time? Are the scariest horror movies by definition the best horror movies? Or is it possible that a horror movie can be great without being scary? Or can a horror movie be better than another horror movie without being scarier?

I have no answers, only questions.

Well I think The Exorcist is the best and scariest. Second place for scariest The Shining.

I shouldn't admit this, but I've still never seen The Exorcist. Maybe I'll watch it this weekend.

I loved The Exorcist III though, and I agree about The Shining. That's some creepy stuff right there.

Yes, you definitely have to see The Exorcist. When you see it, let me know what you think.

Ooh. The Fog is a great one. I love all those early John Carpenter movies.

I think the "scary" in a movie depend mostly of the person who see it.
In my opinion, the scariest of all is still Exorcist...I also like Silent Hill.
For me they're both scary but good in different but similar ways...

But, without any question, some of the bests and scariest films are still the classic like Exorcist or The Shining

The Shining is my #1 horror film of all time, followed closely by Halloween. (And I don't mean that awful Rob Zombie remake either.)

I was kinda made for "our days" (by this I mean, all most of the public is mindless teenagers) so it lost many of the original spirit...but it also had good things, in my vision.
For exemple, I liked the fact that he worked on the time Michael passed in the Mental Instiution...

I think the The thing {1982 remake} was the scariest, I know it was gory and all, but I still think it is also the scariest, followed by the grudge.
