<h4>I found something for you guys, with the help of Master SIRE...</h4>

Satanism is considered by many to be a religion involving either the worship of Satan, or some other supreme being identified with Satan, or the directing of one's life based on inspirations gained from study of the archetype of Satan. The earliest recorded instance of the word is in "A confutation of a booke (by Bp. Jewel) intituled An apologie of the Church of England", by Thomas Harding (1565):
ll, ii, 42 b, "Meaning the time when Luther first brinced to Germanie the poisoned cuppe of his heresies, blasphemies, and Satanismes."
The above quote is using the word to describe Martin Luther's teachings, although Luther himself would have denied either worshipping Satan or being inspired by the study of Satan.
However, many modern Satanists eschew what might be considered traditional religious beliefs, attitudes and worship, in favor of more egoistic worldviews and practices such as magick.
There are various kinds of Satanists in modern society. The main trends can be (adequately but not completely) summarized into:
Sat/Tan, the Dark Doctrines type Satanism
Setian Satanism
LaVeyan Satanism
Other forms (e.g., some Gnostic sects, Order of Nine Angles)

Satanism in Traditional Theology
The term "Satan" originated with Judaism and was expanded upon by Christians and Moslems. This Judeo-Christian-Islamic view of Satan can be broken up as follows:
a. Jewish. There are good urges and bad urges; good tendencies, and bad tendencies in Judaism. These are nurtured within the person, by his own free choices in life. Jews do not believe in a devil. They might be seen, secularly, as using the word "satanic" to mean anything that is opposed to LIFE, such as genocide. Conversely enough, due to some very clever strategies in life and in their own survival, many Christians and Moslems have seen, or do see, Jews themselves as "satanic"! They are also seen as the people that killed Jesus and were one of the first groups of people to be thought of as "satanic" by Catholics.
b. Islamic. "THE Satan" is any adversary or enemy, be it a person, a leader, or a nation of people. Right now, 2001, Moslems see the United States as "The Great Satan" due to the USA's support of Israel and actions against Islamic nations. In the Moslem sense, it means what TO THEM is an "evil adversary."
c. Christian. In Christianity, Satan, also called Lucifer, is a spirit being or physical being or a person (the anti-Christ) that is an enemy of Jesus. Logically, it can't be the enemy of God because their God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent! Therefore, if Christians conceive of this Satan as the adversary of their God, they are probably referring to Jesus. Christians usually consider Satan to be a being or entity.

Sat/Tan, the Dark Doctrines type Satanism
This Satanism is outside of God vs. Satan dualism. In this Satanism Satan is not a Deity, but a principle of Being and Becoming captured in a lingo made out of the eastern words "Sat" and "Tan". Sat: The one ever-present Reality in the infinite world; the divine essence which IS, but cannot be said to "exist" because it is Absoluteness, or Being-ness Itself. Satta: the One and Sole Existence. Sattva: Understanding; quiescence in divine knowledge; a Bodhisattva is a person that possesses this. Satya: Supreme Truth. Satya Yuga: the Golden Age of the age of truth, actually the first Yuga, but often equated with the Trita Yuga (last age). Tan means to "stretch forth" to "become." Words such as Tantra, Tanmatri have the root word "tan" in them.
This system is from an ancient tradition that is 1. genuinely Left-Hand Path, 2. has a Boundless Darkness as the Prime Force, 3. has a "flaming light" within the Darkness that flashes out and becomes all things due to the Urge of the Boundless Darkness, 4. has that Dark Flame as being within people, IF they let it flow. Only people with that Flame within can self actualize, if they choose to do that.
While the words Sat and Tan are used because of their meaning, it is highly possible that the Hebrews committed a cultural inversion on the word Sat, since they did have contact with Persians who definitely did invert all the ancient Sanskrit (Shivaite) concepts. The Hebrews did not invert the word Tan because the Tanaim, in Hebrew, are those who "know what the angels know." The Tanaim are the True Magi.
This type of Satanism includes the Pythagorean system on the pentagram (the pentalphas), which correspond to the Five Dharmas, and the pentamychos system, which corresponds to the fearsome or towo aspects that defend the Dharmas or Five Principles. The Five principles, as seen in nature, are parts of what the Dark Force in Nature does, as it permeates and motivates all of nature.
This type of Sat/Tan Dark Doctrines Satanism can be seen in various organizations that run in various ways, localized or loosely connected.

Setian Satanism
The Egyptian deity Set, to these Satanists, is the real Dark Lord behind the name Satan. They have their own concept of the Black Flame (see the above group, the Sat/Tan type).
This type of Satanism believes that the Hebrews ran into an adversary in Egypt who was the Pharaoh of the Seti Dynasty, where Set was a Deity. After the Pharaoh expelled the Hebrews from Egypt, the Hebrew Bible scribes wrote "Exodus", demonstrating the enormity of this event to the Hebrew people. However, there are apparently no Egyptian records to back up any of the Hebrew claims except a passing mention of the Pharaoh kicking many foreigners out at that time — not just Hebrews. Even so, the impact of this expulsion was large enough to the Hebrews to warrant their calling Egypt and its Seti Pharaoh "ha stn", the adversary. Setian Satanists theorize that "Satan" is a wrong or slanderous label for a legitimate Egyptian God, the God Set.
Their practices and theology are very oriented towards cultivating selfhood. They reject the dissolving of the individual into oneness with existence, and celebrate the separation of the individual self from the rest of the universe. Some followers believe in Set as a real theistic conscious being that appears in revelations and delivers messages, while others revere Set as a more of a principle. How historically correct their picture of Set is might be considered debatable.
This type of Set-Satanism is a legally tax-exempt religion in the United States.

LaVeyan Satanism
This type of Satanism is based on the philosophy of Anton LaVey as outlined in The Satanic Bible and other works. Philosophically, it could be described as heavily influenced by the writings of Aleister Crowley, Niccolò Machiavelli, Friedrich Nietzsche, Ayn Rand, and a few others; "Satan" is appropriated as a positive symbol of this worldview, and is not considered to exist in a literal fashion. Theologically, each individual Satanist is viewed as his or her own god; its rituals are essentially magick in the original sense given by Crowley, with an eye towards furthering the Satanist's ends.

Other groups
In various Gnostic sects, the Serpent was praised as the giver of knowledge, sometimes also Satan with references to his name of Lucifer or "the light-bringer". Some Gnostics claimed that the being imagined as God by Christians and Jews, by the Gnostics known as the Demiurge, was in fact Satan. To some early Gnostic sects were attributed horrible acts (the Borborites and the followers of Carpocrates especially), along with instructions to commit all kind of evil acts to free themselves from the pains of this world, but such accounts are not generally credible, as they were mostly part of rhetorical attacks against these groups by such heresiological writers as Irenaeus.
The Order of Nine Angles has labeled itself Traditional Satanism and considers Satanism to be an individual quest which goes far beyond the gratification of the pleasure-principle and involves the arduous achievement of self-mastery, self-overcoming in a Nietzschean sense, and ultimately cosmic wisdom. Their conception of Satanism is practical, with an emphasis on individual growth into realms of darkness and danger through practical acts of prowess, endurance and the risk of life. In addition, the ONA seek to change, and disrupt, society itself, and espouse human sacrifice — the culling of "opfers" — who are chosen according to strict guidelines. The use of the term "traditional" by these Satanists (ONA) is viewed by some as improper because the ONA refuses to provide any evidence of an old tradition, and much of what they say is even counter to established history; it is felt that "Traditional Satanism" as a label applies better, or at least equally well, to parts of the gnostic movement and its modern remnants.
See also Process Church, Yezidis for groups that have been called Satanist but do not accept that label.

Church of Satan
The Church of Satan is a philosophical/cultural organization which draws its name from the Islamic-Christian concept of Satan, and claims that every Man and Woman is their own God and responsible for their own destiny ("Satan" is used as a symbol and metaphor rather than as an actual deity).
It was established in San Francisco in 1966 by Anton Szandor LaVey. People who practice this belief are called "Satanists".
The Church of Satan does not have or desire tax-exempt status. As part of what it refers to as Pentagonal Revisionism the Church is actively working towards taxation of all Churches, and tries to put forth a policy of "responsibility to the responsible". It neither solicits membership, nor offers a set course of degrees, and it limits the active participation of members to those members over 18 years of age, unless parental consent is given. Members are expected to follow the laws and statutes of their country and municipality.
Since the death of Anton Szandor LaVey in 1997, Peter H. Gilmore has been appointed to his current position as High Priest of the Church. The 'headquarters' have also since moved to New York City.

Wow Lemuria - Very interested tidbit you posted. I was always under the impression that only the Church of Satan existed and that anybody or everybody wanted to be a Satanist joined that one. I was not aware of the other groups/sects that existed. I also didn't know that the Church of Satan was moved to New York City. I guess that would be the place to be.

This reminds me of something else I've learned... the Bible itself calls Satan "The god of deception"... and now that I think about it, does anybody really know anything definitive about him?

Satan...Lucifer...the fallen angel...was caste out for his desire to better like God and viewed himself as such...it is believed that he thought himself to be better than God...so God caste him and his followers into a pit of darkness...to rule in his own world...a god, if you wish...in Hades...Licifer was loved most by God...Lucifer meaning beautiful angel had been spared by God...in Purgatory...perhaps to give time to change his ways.....this never happened...so God vowed eternal damnation to his unclean soul.

Yet, I have never found the actual words referring Satan as a god in the Bible...and....that is alot of reading

sorry...no one assumed anything here...and lemuria is correct in saying the Bible is not for reading...it is for studying.

Just because you read something doesn't necessarily mean you believe it or believe in it...but anytime ism is put on the end of something... that is the pratice of belief; i.e. Hindu-ism Budd-ism Catic-ism(sp)
hence...you say Satanism...well that is the practice and or belief in the subject. Practice is described in the dictionary as: ~ manifesting or acting all or in part of.~ Worship...this is another form of practice.
Christianism is the practice of living the life of Christ and worshipping Him. Satanism is the practice of following satanic ways...another form of worship...I studied these myself when I was in College. LaVey followers are satanists...or should we say devil worshippers. To each their own, but as far as Satanism goes...I will leave that to those who believe they are protected by the false god.

Satanism is one of those philo's that is or can be misunderstood very easily. Satanism isn't about worshipping Satan or any other demonic being. It is about "worship"ing yourself as a person.

Oddly enough, about 35% of all cults worship a deity that probably doesn't exist, and is full of complete idiots.

. Definition of Satanism

Many people use the term satanism to refer to very different religions and practices. Before we can proceed with a study of satanism, it is necessary to clear up the confusion behind the definition of satanism.
In a Christian-dominated America, fundamentalist Christians have been known to use the term satanism to define any practice other than Christianity. This would make 75% of the world's population satanic 1 (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#1). A more common definition of satanism is any practice that deals with the occult, such as wicca, santeria, neopagan traditions, etc. These are not at all related and often have completely different beliefs and structures. For the purpose of this web site, I will narrow down the definition of satanism to any individual or group that worships Satan or a precursor/analogue of Satan, either in a literal or figurative form. Below is a further explanation of these divisions.
| Definition (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#definition)| Atheistic/Theistic (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#atheistic/theistic)| History (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#history)| Modern Panics (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#modern panics)| Links (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#links)| Bibliography (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#bibliography)| References (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#references)|
II. Atheistic vs. Theistic Satanism

Atheistic Satanism: Satanists in this tradition believe in, and worship, no deity at all. Instead they honor the spirit of Satan, or at least some equivalent of Satan (such as the ancient Egyptian god Set, who will be discussed later). Atheistic Satanists worship the ideals of Satan and present him as an idol whose traits are to be emulated. Satan is often also worshipped simply as a symbol of resistance to dominant Christian ethos. A good example of a group based on these principles is the Church of Satan.
Theistic Satanism: These are practices that involve the belief that Satan or some equivalent does exist, and this satanic deity is the main focus of worship. The Temple of Set, a splinter group from the aforementioned Church of Satan, is a church that leans more toward this philosophy.
| Definition (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#definition)| Atheistic/Theistic (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#atheistic/theistic)| History (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#history)| Modern Panics (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#modern panics)| Links (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#links)| Bibliography (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#bibliography)| References (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#references)|
III. Satanism Through History

The earliest satanic tradition began with the ancient Egyptian deity Set, who dates back at least until 3200 BC, possibly as early as 5000 BC 2 (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#2). Set was a god that represented individual consciousness. He also was linked to dark forces such as thunder and hostility. When temples that worshipped rival deities such as Osiris took over, Set was cast as an evil and malevolent being. Some Setian ideas of independence and magic survived and would become a tradition in the ancient Greek world.
Satan was adopted by the Hebrews as an agent for God, somewhat of an angel sent to punish the sinners 3 (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#3). Later Satan was changed into the antithesis of God, and thus an innately evil god. When Christianity took hold, deities from pagan traditions would be incorporated into the image of Satan (cloven hooves, horns, etc.). In 1486, two monks, Kramer and Sprenger, wrote The Malleus Maleficarium, also know as The Witches' Hammer. This book detailed activities of witches and other so-called satanists. These activities included: flying on broomsticks, having wild sexual orgies, eating children, and inducing plagues. No evidence of any kind of organized religion with these activities has ever surfaced. Nevertheless, the book began an satanic panic that resulted in many "heretics" being tortured and executed by Christian inquisitions. There are no accurate records of the number of people killed by various inquisitions, but estimates range up to 13 million 4 (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/satanism/intro.html#4).
The black arts and various occult practices resurfaced in the 19th century. The most famous movement was led by Aleister Crowley, a mystic who would believed in pagan traditions and sex magick. Though not a satanist, Crowley's ideas would influence later satanist traditions. These culminated in the creation of the world's first organized satanic church, the Church of Satan, in 1966. This church and the Temple of Set are discussed in detail in their own separate links; the rest of this page is dedicated to recent myths surrounding satanism.

Self Worship means that you consider your world to be the construct of your own. It means that your point of view is holy (http://www.dpjs.co.uk/disliked_words.html#Holy). As our only source of information is in our own database then it is our holy mission to ourselves to find out the truth, the whole truth and to let no disinformation sway us. Believing in a lie, in something that is not true, is a sin and a blasphemy to yourself, your holy subjection and such stupidity clearly violates the primary sin of Satanism (http://www.dpjs.co.uk/stupid.html).
The persual of the truth, the logical truth, is the holy mission of those who worship themselves. No assumption should be left untrialed, and no taboo should be left untouched for fear that an untruth creep and festers within your reality. A mistruth within our personal models of reality is blasphemy (http://www.dpjs.co.uk/blasphemy.html) to our existence. The tree of knowledge is the key to happiness and the justification of your existence: To worship yourself one has to realize that you are only temporary, a fleeting biological method, and as such no one else regards you as highly as you yourself can! Keep your reality pure, keep it true, do not let it be refuted so always be ready to shine through and alter what you thought you knew should you ever be proven wrong. An outstanding characteristic of a good Satanist is his ability, after a long argument, to say "Oh, you're actually right about this, I'll use that fact in the future."
