It is not surprisingly that the russians have refined the techniques of torture. I know they also use to ressurect a person, if he accidently dies, only to continue the torture. They will keep you at a point of death for as long as they need. Though it takes skilled persons with a history of torturing people, and/or have some medical knowledge of anatomy.
