Let's see, there's Stephen King (of course), V.C. Andrews, Crowley, Rice... who are we missing?
Not a lot of Stephen King's works enthrall me (they seem to me to mostly be composed of horror at the worst and most inane of human nature in a loveless state rather than fear of the unknown and unknowable)
BUT, I thought one of his early short stories, "Graveyard Shift" was absolutely fantastic and very effective as a horror story.
And who can forget "The Yellow Wallpaper"?
Though not often thought of in the same light as modern horror, the old Yiddish tale "Midnight in the Old Marketplace" really fills the bill, and "Der Golem" is the same idea that was later made famous my Mary Shelley in "Frankenstein".
So anyone else have any illuminations? Who are your favorite authors and why? Or do you love a particular work?
