Good Evening. As all of you probly know, I am new at this site. But I am an old haunter who has been a Halloween buff since the late '70's. Back then it was amazing what a HAUNTED HOUSE could get away with. Today we have been regulated, fire coded, law suited to death. We have to water things down, make everything ultra safe. It is not time to rant and rave about things! Sorry about that guys. Thank you WICKED for welcoming me. I would love to read some stories from other HAUNTREPRENAURS (sp?) and I shall also tell some as time goes by. If I told you everything now it would be a 400pg. novel. At least!

well i live in a small town and am friends with all the cops and firemen. so i can get away with a bit..the way i look at it is don't tell them and they wont know until its to late. and if anybody gets hurt drag them to another property and knock 'em out..i mean if they can't remember what happend then they can't sue me right?

LOL thats too funny Gremlinz--I like that idea!

I don't have a Professional haunt, but we do make a yard haunt every year. And even then we worry about someone suing if they S*** their pants. So we just tell everyone that the poeple that live in the house are on vacation, and have NO idea we're using their house! And I'm looking forward to that novel Jack......The dead have nothing but time

this year i might take out an insurance policy for my haunt for the night. better be safe then sorry and since i'm going to be advertising there will be some little punk ass that breaks his/her ankle cuz they got scared and ran off the side walk...or i might just put up an enter at your own risk sign...don't touch things and things wont touch you sign. that sould keep me out of trouble...i mean i normally have a cop for security to talk to anyways...(like i said i know all the cops in my town and they come over to my house occasionally and they normally are posted as my security on halloween...besides they are fun to talk to to pass time.)

:DFor a while there I was afraid I was the only one that haunted professionally. First of all, the "Don't touch us, and we won't touch you!" sign doesn't work or hold up in court. The best defense you have is that you live in a small town and believe it or not, the people there are tighter than a big city. I'd love to do spectacular home haunt and believe me I have the props to do it(20+yrs. of cllecting) but I live in a neiborhood that you don't leave anything outside that you want to keep.I will set up my porch with simple stuff like fog machines and special effect lighting for trick-or-treaters and then take it down after most of them have gone home.

Yeah we made a six foot Grim Reaper holding a tombstone with the "Enter at your own risk, Touch nothing...." phrase, but in my neighborhood they mostly speak spanish so it didn't really help anyway--But I felt better having it. You can see it in my photo album on the Halloween forum under halloween 2002.

i know what your talking about Jack.. i have to wait till halloween to put all of my stuff up...its takes me a good 4-5 hours to just take everything out. i mean i live in a nice neighbor hood and all but there are still jerks that will take anything that is left out. so i normally get permission to skip school on halloween and set up my haunt. which last year i start setting it up at like 3 and didn't get finished and dressed until 6'ish and that was with a few helpers...and we had to put it all away the same night...so i eneded up just throwing everything in my garage and putting away over the weekend...which wasn't the funnest of tasks...but life goes on...i think

[:p]Here is a story from one of the houses that I worked for back in '88 or '89 to kick start this thread. This is actually a humorous one. We had a room that was called the Shipwreck. We had actully built a ship that looked to be sinking into the floor. The room was designed to host dead pirates and a ton of fog.(Kinda like Pirates of the Carrib.) We also had a Mermaid sitting on the bow of the ship to distract the victims while our undead pirate came out from behind them. One night we were short handed and had our mermaid handle the room herself. Things went fairly well for her until a group of guys came into her room and stopped dead in their tracks. She did her schpeel but the guys just gawked. This made her nervous because they weren't leaving. She pushed her panic button and alerted security that there was a problem. They show up and tell the patrons to move along. Since they didn't do anything wrong they weren't asked to leave. What our mermaid did not know was that while doing her thing, her top had slipped and she was exposed and gave these patrons a different kind of shock! To this day she still blushes when this is brought up:D

Well, as far as I know aren't mermaids supposed to be topless?? LOL, Those guys probably though "Man! these people really get into realism!", or maybe they were wondering where they could buy such a real looking prosthetic breast, hehe.

On the subject of yard haunts, we have to do the same as you guys--get up at the buttcrack just so we can set up, and have plenty of time for everyones make-up and costuming. Play hard all night then tear it all down and put it away. Then we all sit around talking about what fun we had, and what we can do for next year. I'd like to get more and more people to show up for the haunt, so we can ask for can food donations at the gate, and take it over to the food bank. Each year is getting bigger, so maybe next year I'll find out how to say 'food donation required at the gate'--in spanish, LOL

I'm sure they will gladly donate cans of beans. I know, thats was bad. One of the things I hate most about going to haunts are the people that are jerks. I always see people sneaking in through the back, or they show up drunk and try to start fights with the actors. I'm planning on doing a haunt eventually, its just rather expensive for what I have planned and I need a large building to do it in. Of course, theres the lawsuit thing I have to be prepared for also. Theres a newsletter from "Haunted News" that has good stuff about haunts. I'll get the link and post it.

I am hosting a haunt this year, I am going to guide it, with 25 actors inside. I am going to tell them from the very beginning "Don't touch us, or we WILL bite back" the number one thing to remember when doing a haunt is safty!!! So it is a good idea to maybe have some off duty police officers on hand (just in case). And if they try to shut me down because of hazzards? then I will throw eggs at there cars, and tell them that Grim did it...(your welcome buddy)

Step into the unknown and discover reality...welcome to my HELL, If you are looking for sheer terror, you have come to the right place, I am here to send chills down your spine, and I am not here to put a smile on your face. As in the famous lines of Laberinth.... Just Fear me, Love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave........Sweet dreams

Off duty police are a good idea. Our haunts' owner actually hires an officer or two, in uniform, with guns to watch over the crowds and haul off the rowdy drunks.

Have fun with your haunt and becareful of the sue happy idiots.

I have done a haunted house, but the establishment since shut down. The fake blood and body part wars were fun. We were very naughty and made it as scary as possible. Meat trays from the store and plastic tarp are wonderful props, BTW. Now I do a home haunt. I must be good, because we didn't get a single Trick or Treater last year.

that blows man..you should try doing small advertisements...like for me i live in a small town so if i put an ad at the post office, i should get a decent turn out..you should think of ways to advertise to a small group of people.

I think I'll use yard signs this year to lure the kids in. But you know that 'stranger danger' crap. I don't even have a lot of gore or anything. :)

GremlinzGuy
09-21-2003, 01:29 PM
its not the gore man, all you have to do is put them in a state of unknowing..once they don't know what is going on all there scenses pick up and they are really alert..then you can scare the crap out of 'em...its all in the attack..not what is gorish..hehe

Hehehehe. You're as sneaky as I am. What is cool is stuff from dollar stors scare kids. I have the spider victim and graveyard scene up now, and I'm going to post signs for them to come to the porch. I go all out with decorated trees, pumped up music and other stuff. It is hard to have a good scare though in the daylight hours. Sigh.

Huh? Who switched topics one me? C'mon, out with it. What are you to fighting about? Speaking of said subject, I keep meaning to sign up to teach adult readers but can never find the time. It is also a bit scary thinking of going to a stranger's house...or don't they do classes that way anymore?

Anyhow, good luck getting your things up. :)
