What was the first horror movie or book or story you remember experiencing? What do you most remember about it?

I think one of the first scary movies I remember was an ABC after-school special. It was based on the book "Riddle of the red room". I remember I wasn't able to finish watching it so to this day it bugs me that I don't know how it ended. I keep thinking I would buy the book and read it, even if it is a children's book. Another one I remember is a Vincent Price movie "House of the long shadows" I remember it scared me really bad, there was a part with a hanging man and a woman getting her face burned off by acid. It scared the heck out of me. When I watched it years later I laughed at the cheesiness of it, but I loved it all the same. Plus, it made me a Vincent Price fan for life.

One of the Poltergeist movies I believe and another one about killer clowns. I cannot recall much about them because I was about 3 or so. I had a babysitter who watched horror movies with her teenage boys all day. There were probably some others as well but again; can't recall. I vividly remember seeing bits and pieces of other movies as well; one about a killer dog but I don't think it was Cujo. I also remember seeing Night of the Lepus, a movie about giant killer rabbits.

For book I think it was "You Can't Scare Me". Ironic name for a horror book, lol. Though I could be wrong, I'm not much of a reader though.
As for movie, I think it was A Nightmare On Elm Street. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was.

Watching the Wizard of Oz scared the hell out of me! The wicked witch, flying monkey and the wizard kept me in fear as I watched this movie when I was very very very young!

Ahh yes the flying monkeys from OZ. I thought they were cool and remember asking mom and dad if we could get one as a pet. I think they gave me that "What have we created here look". When I was just a HorrorBoy the first thing I remember that scared me was the old Twilight Zone and Outer Limits tv shows. The first movie I can remember was an old Vincent Price one called The Last Man on Earth. I believe the recent I am Legend was a sort of remake of that.

Why does everyone think that the Wizard of Oz is scary? I rather enjoyed it. =S

I was on the phone earlier today and had a memory come to me from when I was young about another horror movie or television show I saw. The premise was that there was a woman with a bowl of fruit on the table; the fruit started talking and to prevent eating them she sewed her mouth shut. Dose this sound familiar to anyone?
EDIT: Think I got it; its an episode of Tales From the Darkside called "Love Hungry" I believe. Scared the crap outta me as a kid.

Wizard Of Oz is still friggin' scary. It's probably because they actually had to act, since they didn't really have much for camera tricks. Real acting is much more effective.

Yes that is a wise statement. So sad how this has disappeared from movie making today.

There's a rumor that you can see one of the munchkins hang himself in the background. When they start walking down the yellow brick road (all 4 of them) you can see something drop down in the forest in the background. They say it was a munchkin committing suicide.
As for the "first", my first horror movie was Alien. I remember hiding behind the couch and peaking out every now and then.

I agree with the "disappearance of real acting" I think the love of special effects has hurt the movie industry. The movies are more expensive to make than ever but aren't as nearly as scary as some of the older movies that were more suggestive and relied on the "contagion" of fear from actors to the audience.

First memory of being scared, at the Movies, was watching Max von Sydow play Emperor Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon
I was about 4/5 and I hid behind the cinema seat. Loved it though.
Used to like Fear magazine, a comic in the mid 80s, with a feature called the Thirteenth Floor, and loads of Werewolves and Vampires.
First adult Horror fiction I read was Carrie by Stephen King, when 13, closely followed by Salem's Lot, The Shining, then James Herbert's The Rats.
First Horror film: The Shining.
Watched late at night when in Hospital, on TV. Scary and brilliant

The Tingler with Vincent Price
(and yes the flying monkeys scared me too -- I cried when they tore the scarecrow apart)
