I woke up in the morning to bright sunlight (even though in reality it was night). My brother and I had to toss our things in our backpacks and run out of the house and speed through the highway to get to school in time. We got there just in time, and I got out of the truck while he went off to park it. Halfway to the school, I realized I'd forgotten my backpack. I couldn't go back now! So I just hoped my brother would bring me it.
I hung out with my friends in the courtyard for a few minutes until the bell rang. Like an idiot, I went in the back way. I stopped inside the door. Why was I the only one going in this way? I didn't know how to get to class from back here! Oh well, I'd try it again like last time (I felt like this had happened before).
I looked around, investigating my surroundings. To my right was a room with stairs leading downward into what I assumed to be a boiler room. To my left was another set of stairs leading up. I knew in my gut that that was the most likely route to my classes, but I felt compelled to go forward. Forward there was a metal set of double doors, no windows. I didn't stop to wonder why; I just went on in.
The inside of the room was air conditioned to the maximum and it was dark. I couldn't see anything at first. I fumbled for the light switch, but there didn't appear to be one anywhere. I hugged myself tightly, trying to escape the cold as I ran my fingers over the wall.
“Ouch!” I cried out as my leg hit something hard, almost knocking me over.
I stopped where I was, admitting defeat, and decided to give my eyes time to adjust. I sat down on whatever it was I had run into and waited patiently. As my pupils dilated and my vision focused, I began to see shapes. Strange shapes. They weren't moving. Each was about a yard high and six feet long.
I waited a little longer until my vision came in as clear as it could and then tried to scream. I was surrounded by dead bodies, lying on hospital beds! I tried to scream, over and over, but no matter what I did, all that came out were strange squeaking noises. This wasn't a school. It was a morgue!
I jumped up off the bed I was sitting on (thank God it was empty), and rushed for a door. This one had a small window I could peer out of. I gasped when I saw two nurses walking by and made a break for some stairs at the back of the room.
As I neared the landing, I noticed the two people sitting on a bed up there, just talking amongst themselves. They showed no signs that they even noticed I was there. I peeked over the railing as the nurses walked away, and then I headed back down the stairs. I returned to sitting on my empty bed, not sure what to do next, when two people on a bed in from of me rolled over.
“And now Amanda is dead as well,” the person on the left side of the bed sighed to the other.
My eyes widened, and once again, I found myself squeaking anxiously in a failed attempt to scream. That was it! I jumped to my feet and fled out the windowed door. I wasn't going to sit there like that any longer. I ignored all the people in the hallways, who didn't seem to notice me anyway, and rushed down the hallway, up stairs, and in and out of rooms until I found my mother (why she was there, I have no idea).
I shook her hard, waking her from her sound sleep. She woke and gazed up at me, horrified. From there, we walked together back to the morgue and I explained what I'd seen and heard. She sat on the bed next to me, sighing. It was then that she explained that I truly was dead.
“Quit lying to me, Satan!” I heard myself cry out (don't ask...).
From that point, I found myself in a bright room with my best friend, Emo (yes my best friend's name is Emo. It's short for Emilio). The walls were yellow and padded and the bed that came from the walls was pink. My best friend pulled the bed out and I heard myself scream. I fled to the opposite wall and squatted down the the corner, hiding from the bed. Emo kept trying to reassure me it was okay, but I knew it wasn't!
Suddenly, a giant wall of silver padding covered the walls. I ran to him, standing in the middle of the room, terrified. The walls began to close in on us. I cried out and tried to figure out something, but my brain was nothing but fuzz. All my fear had impaired every other feeling I had. The walls came in closer and closer, trying to smother us.
“This is your dream! Make it stop!” Emo suddenly cried out.
Dream? This is a dream? I felt myself fighting. I tried to force my eyes open, now that I knew this was just a dream, but it just wasn't meant to happen. The walls continued to close in. We were helpless. The padding tightened around us and next thing we knew, the room had exploded and we were once again standing in the middle of the morgue. I was still fighting. Wake up, Mandy! Wake the heck up!
When I woke up finally... my heart was seriously trying to get out of my chest, I swear. Yeah, it sounds lame, but it was scary!
